The Northeast Generals of the North American Hockey League today signed standout goaltender Joey Stanizzi to a tender for the 2019-20 season. The 2000 born goaltender from Chelmsford, MA has been at Middlesex Prep for the past 4 seasons where he has climbed the ranks of prep school goaltenders. This year Joey finished with a 1.89 Goals Against Average and a .949 Save Percentage (6 shutouts). He was the top ranked goaltender in all of Prep hockey.
“We have been very fortunate with goaltending in our 3 year history. We have only had 3 goaltenders in 3 years. We had Gabe Vinal (Brown) and David Fessenden (Alabama-Huntsville) in year 1 and have had Fezz and Marko Sturma the past 2 years. We knew losing both goaltenders next year put us in a spot where we needed to make sure we solidified the position early. Joey came to practice with us and just blew us away with his technique and aggressiveness. What also stood out was what a great kid he is. The book on him is that he is an animal on and off the ice as far as preparation goes. He never quits on pucks and that was apparent when he was with us. His prep school numbers are obviously great but we saw a goalie that has the potential to keep getting better and be an impact player for us on day 1. And more importantly an impact kid in our locker room.” Said Generals GM Bryan Erikson.
The 6’0 Goaltender has received many awards this year because of his play at Middlesex and also has had a ton of NCAA Division 1 interest. Stanizzi has steadily improved every year at Middlesex. His Goals Against Average went from 2.97 as a Sophomore, to 2.65 as a Junior to 1.89 as a Senior. His save percentage has also steadily improved each year going from .928 to .936 to .949 this year.
“He is a very good goaltender who still has a ton of room for improvement. I am very excited to get to work with him this summer and next year. I think he will continue the great tradition we have started here with having great goalies that are ready to make the jump to the next level.” Said Generals Goalie Coach Steve Mastalerz of GDS Goalies.
