The Generals were able to get back in the win column against the New Hampshire Mountain Kings, but were unable to mount the comeback against the Johnstown Tomahawks this weekend at the New England Sports Village, winning on the road Wednesday, Nov. 1 2-1, before falling in both games on Saturday, Nov. 5, 6-1, and Sunday, Nov. 6, 4-3.
The first of the month saw a low scoring affair between the Generals and the Mountain Kings, with neither team being able to find the back of the net through the first 22 minutes of play. Forward Joseph McGraw broke open the scoring with his fourth of the season two and a half minutes into the period, before New Hampshire responded 14 minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. Neither team found the twine through regulation, leading to an overtime bout between the two sides. A little under two minutes into overtime, forward Jacob Wilson found the back of the net after a two-on-one to give the Generals the extra point, and walk away with a 2-1 road victory.
Game one on the weekend saw the Tomahawks jump out early and often, chasing starting Goaltender Marks Slavinkis-Repe after scoring four goals in the first seven minutes of the game to make it 4-0 after the first period. Johnstown would find their fifth in the early goings of the second, before forward Joseph McGraw potted a powerplay goal to get the Generals on the board 13 minutes into the period. The Tomahawks found the back of the net again two minutes later, and with neither team finding the back of the net in the third period, the final score would stand at 6-1. Goaltender Toby Hopp stopped 24 of 26 shots in relief of Slavinkis-Repe, who stopped 4 of 8 before being lifted.
Sunday’s matchup was a much closer affair, with the Generals jumping ahead early thanks to a great two-way play by forward Jake Gutwirth, and defensemen Brendan Kimball’s first goal of the season, to make it 2-0 after the first. The Tomahawks scored two of their own in the second period, but forward Frank D’Ancona found the back of the net for the 10th time this season to make it 3-2 through two periods of play. The Tomahawks found their way onto the score board twice in the third, scoring 11 seconds, and then 11 minutes, into the period to tie and take the lead. The Generals furiously fought back late, but to no avail, falling 4-3. Hopp saved 30 of 34 shots in the loss.
The Generals will have a week to recoup, and look to rebound against the New Hampshire Mountain Kings once again as New Hampshire comes to visit on Sunday, Nov. 12 at the New England Sports Village once more.
