Generals hit the road against New Hampshire, Johnstown

The Generals were back on the road for the first time in the month of March, with a victory against the New Hampshire Mountain Kings on Wednesday, March 6, 4-1, before being swept on the road against the Johnstown Tomahawks Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9. Those scores were 2-0 and 5-3 respectively.  

 

Wednesday saw the Gens take on New Hampshire for the first time since November, with forward Jacob Wilson getting the jump with a short handed goal only two minutes into the game to give the Generals a 1-0 lead. Forward Ryan Remick added to the damage with a powerplay goal five and a half minutes in to make it 2-0, with neither team finding the net again till early in the second. Forward Jake Gutwirth made it three unanswered for Northeast just short of three minutes in before New Hampshire responded a little under seven minutes into the second to make it 3-1. Remick potted his second power play goal of the game only 52 seconds into the third period to make it 4-1, which stood till the final horn. 

 

Goaltender Toby Hopp got the start in net to begin the road trip, making 41 stops of 42 shots in a strong showing. Defenseman Brendan Kimball and forward Sixten Jennersjo both recorded two assists to tie Remick for the lead in points on the night. 

Game one of the weekend in Pennsylvania saw a closely contested, low scoring affair between the two sides. Neither team found twine in the first period, taking eight and a half minutes into the second before Johnstown was able to capitalize on a power play to make it 1-0. The Generals battled into the third period trying to mount the comeback, but the Tomahawks potted the empty netter to give themselves an insurance goal, marking the final at 2-0.  

Goaltender Ryan Nolan, stepping in on an emergency basis for injury for the weekend, got the start, batting away 34 of the 35 shots he faced in his first career NAHL game. The 18 year old from Hampton, New Hampshire was the fifth overall pick in the QMJHL American draft in 2022. 

 

Game two saw Johnstown get the jump again on Northeast, scoring a power play goal just short of six minutes in, before Remick scored his own power play goal 10 minutes in to make it a 1-1 game. The Tomahawks responded three minutes later to make it 2-1 before the end of the first. The home squad jumped on the Gens early again in the second, scoring a little over a minute and a half in to jump ahead 3-1. Forward Brandon Spaulding responded eight seconds later with a short handed solo effort to make it 3-2, before forward Tyler Ramm tied the game with only 28 seconds left in the second to make it 3-3. The Gens battled in the third once more, but Johnstown potted the go ahead goal once more four minutes in, before finding an insurance goal 17 minutes in to make it 5-3, which stood as the final. 

 

Nolan got the start once more, stopping 27 of 32 shots in his second career game. Six different Generals recorded a point in the game. 

The Generals will stay on the road to continue the month of march, heading off to Middletown, New Jersey to take on the New Jersey Titans in a two game series. Game one will be on Friday, March 15, at 7:30 PM EST, before being followed up by game two on Saturday, March 16, at 7:00 PM EST.
